What are the qualifications?

The Level 5 Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism is a recognised qualification that aims to upskill primary school teachers, higher level teaching assistants and teaching assistants with extensive experience (experience across year groups and pupil groups) to improve the overall delivery of the physical education curriculum within primary schools. On successful completion of this qualification, delegates will be able to assist in raising the standards within primary school physical education teaching.

The Level 6 Award in Primary School Physical Education Subject Leadership is a recognised qualification to improve the overall delivery of the physical education curriculum within primary schools. The aim of this qualification is to up skill primary school teachers to enable them to lead the delivering of the primary school physical education curriculum. On successful completion of this qualification, delegates will be able to take subject leadership within primary school physical education teaching and deliver sustainable high quality primary school physical education.

Much has been stated about the importance of the current physical education and school sport premium funding and the ability of schools to not only evidence actions but also show sustainable impact. This qualification is an ideal vehicle for demonstrating an investment in the improvement of teaching in physical education as well as upskilling current staff.

Content

The qualification enables delegates to understand the requirements of the primary school physical education curriculum. They will acquire the knowledge and skills that underpin 'good or better' teaching and learning within primary school physical education. Candidates will also review and evaluate the PE, physical activity and sport programme at their host school, identifying potential ways to improve policy and practice.

Tutors/ Assessors

The tutor, Chris Jew, is an experienced physical education specialist, known and regarded across the county. His background is in the leading of Physical Education, being the leader of a School Sport Partnership and a current School Games Organiser for East Shropshire. This will be his 12th year of delivery of this course. To date over 70 delegates have successfully completed the courses.

Delivery

The average learning time for this qualification is 141 hours. This is broken down into:-

  • 6 days attendance at a school based delivery centre. (42 Guided Learning Hours). This is provisionally equally mapped across the three terms during the academic year
